IOP vs. PHP – understanding the difference and what’s right for me

Q: What’s the difference between Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?
A: Both IOP and PHP are structured mental health treatment programs, but they differ in intensity and time commitment: Both include Group Therapy, Weekly one on one therapy sessions, and psychiatry.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP):
- Typically meets 3-5 times per week for 3 hours a day
- Total of 9-15 hours of treatment per week
- Allows you to maintain work, school, or family responsibilities
- Includes individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatry, and psychoeducation
- Perfect for those who need more support than weekly therapy but can function independently
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP):
- Meets 4-7 days per week for 5-6 hours per day
- Total of 20-36 hours of treatment per week
- More intensive than IOP but less restrictive than inpatient care
- Includes individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatry, and psychoeducation
- Ideal for those stepping down from inpatient care or needing intensive support while living at home
Q: How do I know which program is right for me?
A: Consider PHP if you:
- Have recently been discharged from inpatient treatment
- Experience severe symptoms that interfere with daily functioning
- Need intensive support but can safely return home each day
- Have limited support systems at home
Consider IOP if you:
- Can manage basic daily activities independently
- Need structure but want to maintain work/school commitments
- Are stepping down from a more intensive level of care
- Want to prevent relapse while building coping skills
